Oh boy, have I got a story for you. But first, let me ask, who doesn’t love getting stuck on the side of a mountain while trying to reach one of the most breathtaking destinations in the world? Especially when it’s on a bus with questionable safety standards and absolutely no amenities. Sounds like a dream come true, right?
Well, my adventurous fellow travelers, that dream came true for me and my fellow passengers on the Leh to Khardungla bus journey. Not only did we get to enjoy the thrill of constantly wondering if the bus would make it up the winding road, but we also got the added bonus of spending hours in the freezing cold at 18,000ft with no shelter and limited oxygen. Ah, nature’s beauty at its finest!
But wait, it gets better. The bus, as if sensing our desperation, finally gave out. That’s right, we were stuck. At 18,000ft. In the middle of nowhere. It was like a scene straight out of a disaster movie. We were all huddled together, shivering and praying for a miracle.
Thankfully, after what felt like an eternity, another bus finally came to our rescue. It may have been even sketchier than the first one, but at that point we were just grateful to have a chance at survival. And let me tell you, crawling onto that bus after hours of waiting in the cold was a feeling I’ll never forget.
