Mere weeks after her commencement address, Maryam Mohammed became a target of a vicious smear campaign orchestrated by those who believe that critiquing the government is tantamount to inciting violence.
She was dubbed a lawless, anti-Semitic, and dangerous individual by the tabloids, Mayor of NYC, and her own law school, in an attempt to discredit her and paint her as a threat to society. But what was her crime? Simply speaking the truth.
It’s ironic that a school that prides itself on being progressive turns its back on a student who embodied everything that it claims to celebrate. Maryam’s speech may have challenged some people’s beliefs, but that’s what makes it all the more worthwhile. Speaking truth to power is never easy, but it’s necessary.
The fact that Maryam’s speech landed her in hot water is emblematic of the larger issue at hand. Our society is so resistant to change that it feels threatened by anyone who wants to challenge the status quo. But bravery is not the absence of fear; it’s the willingness to speak up in spite of it.
