In a world that should strive for equality, Kamala Harris, the Vice President, has denounced the persistence of racism in the home appraisal market, stating that discrimination against Black homeowners is prevalent and a significant issue. Despite efforts for fairness, systemic racism continues to exert itself, setting up insurmountable obstacles for Black Americans.
A home is not only a place of residence, but an investment for financial stability, and the appraisal of such property should reflect its true value. However, for many Black homeowners, this is not the case. Studies have shown that home appraisals of Black-owned properties are less than those of white-owned properties in the same neighborhood. The disparity in appraisal values introduces greater barriers to accessing credit and generates an array of economic setbacks for Black Americans.
The efforts of Kamala Harris to prevent racial bias in home appraisals are admirable. The 2023 plans aim to eliminate these racial disparities by looking into the infrastructure of the appraisal system, including discrimination in the hiring of appraisers and creating new regulations to monitor the fairness of appraisals. With these new measures, it is hoped that these new measures will encourage appraisers to become more objective when determining property values.
The persistence of racial bias in home appraisals is yet another demonstration of how the Black community in America remains disenfranchised. The work that lies ahead involves equalizing the playing field for Black homeowners and offering corrective solutions for inequality within the housing market. Only then can we achieve the goal of being a truly fair and equitable society, where the inequities of the past no longer dictate our future.
